Hi, my name is Nate Fakes!
Yes, that really is my last name. I’m a professional syndicated cartoonist with King Features who resides in Southern California. My daily gag comic, Break of Day, is published in over 80 newspapers. Additionally, I have created comics for MAD Magazine, Scholastic, and major greeting card companies. I was also a full-time cartoonist for Red Bull. Plus, I’m a published graphic novelist, with my debut book, A Fade of Light.
I love teaching art, and I wanted to create the ultimate course on how I approach creating my gag comic using an iPad and the Procreate software. This entertaining course is a journey into how I do what I do – from the foundation of the creative process, through writing, rough drafts, final comics, and ultimately, distributing them. I even get into how to sell your comics in today’s current environment.

Introduction to Gag Cartoons
In this module, we'll explore what a gag cartoon is and how humor works in single-panel comics. You'll get familiar with essential tools like the iPad Pro, Procreate, and sketchbooks, while learning about the creative process and developing your unique cartooning style. We'll also practice beginner exercises and dive into the balance between words and visuals in humor.Â

Drawing Fundamentals for Cartooning
In this module, you'll dive into the fundamentals of cartooning by working with basic shapes and expressive lines. You'll learn to draw dynamic facial expressions and body language, while mastering Procreate brushes and settings. Through engaging exercises, you'll sketch various expressions and develop characters full of personality.
MODULE 4
Composition & Layout
In this module, you'll learn how to frame a single-panel cartoon and effectively space text within it. We'll cover step-by-step rough drafting, designing impactful speech bubbles, and using perspective and depth in simple ways. You'll also practice balancing text and visuals by sketching a rough version of one of your gag comics from Module 2.
MODULE 5
 Inking & Coloring in Procreate
In this module, you'll discover how to digitally ink and color your cartoons using Procreate, including tips on choosing the right "ink" and working with layers efficiently. We'll explore adding textures, subtle details, and exporting high-quality final art. You'll also follow a complete cartooning process from start to finish and finalize your rough cartoon from Module 4.
MODULE 6
Selling & Publishing Your Cartoons
In this module, you'll gain insight into the evolving cartoon market and learn how to get your work published in newspapers, magazines, and greeting cards. We'll cover how to grow a strong presence on social media, build a professional portfolio and website, and explore ways to monetize your cartoons through merch, books, and more. The module includes a hands-on exercise to set up your social accounts and website.
MODULE 7
Advanced Tips & Final Project
In this module, you'll learn strategies for organizing your time and overcoming writer's block to stay creative and consistent. We'll discuss how to seek and use feedback to improve your work. For the final project, you'll complete and publish ten cartoons on your social media and website, wrapping up the course with clear next steps for your cartooning journey.
